What Does it Mean When an Attorney is a Certified Specialist?
A Certified Specialist is more than just an attorney who specializes in family law. Despite an attorney’s number of years of experience, he/she is only allowed to identify as a “specialist” after the State Bar of California awards them the certification.
A California attorney who is certified by the State Bar as a Certified Specialist must have:
- Taken and passed a rigorous written examination that covers only family law topics;
- Demonstrated a high level of experience in family law;
- Fulfilled ongoing education requirements; and
- Been favorably evaluated by other attorneys and judges familiar with her or his work.
A Certified Specialist must fulfill ongoing legal education requirements and continue to demonstrate a high level of experience and skill in the field of family law to remain certified.
